PROJECT: Dredging – Goonyella GS4A

SCOPE OF WORK:

Maxitool Australia was engaged to desilt GS4A which is the final sediment catchment pond for Goonyella Riverside mine before the silt flows into Eureka Creek and off site.

CHALLENGES FACED:

A lack of anchor points on shore and the restrictions on using screw pile anchors due to the risk of ground disturbance meant an in-pond anchoring system was devised for the project. Existing permanent pontoon pump installations needed to be moved whilst being operational in order to dredge under them and then reinstated.

ACHIEVEMENTS/OUTCOMES

At the end of the project some 40, 000m3 of solids were removed and pumped to a nearby slurry deposition area at the neighbouring BMA Broadmeadow mine site lease. Maxitool Australia also was engaged to dewater the slurry deposition area and return the resultant water back to the Goonyella Riverside mine water management loop. This project was critical for BMA Goonyella Riverside’s site silt run off management and ensured that during a large weather event there would be no uncontrolled discharge of silt off site.
